اَلَمۡ  نَجۡعَلۡ لَّہٗ عَیۡنَیۡنِ وَ  لِسَانًا وَّ  شَفَتَیۡنِ وَ ہَدَیۡنٰہُ  النَّجۡدَیۡنِ  فَلَا  اقۡتَحَمَ الۡعَقَبَۃ  وَ مَاۤ  اَدۡرٰىکَ مَا الۡعَقَبَۃُ فَکُّ رَقَبَۃٍ  اَوۡ  اِطۡعٰمٌ فِیۡ یَوۡمٍ ذِیۡ مَسۡغَبَۃٍ  یَّتِیۡمًا ذَا مَقۡرَبَۃٍ  اَوۡ مِسۡکِیۡنًا ذَا مَتۡرَبَۃٍ  ثُمَّ کَانَ مِنَ الَّذِیۡنَ  اٰمَنُوۡا وَ تَوَاصَوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ  وَ تَوَاصَوۡا بِالۡمَرۡحَمَۃِ.(90: 8-17)

فَلَا:   but not

اقۡتَحَمَ:  he surmount

الۡعَقَبَۃَ: the steep path

وَ:  and

مَاۤ:   what

اَدۡرٰىکَ:  have you understood

الۡعَقَبَۃُ: this steep path is

 

فَلَا

اقۡتَحَمَ

الۡعَقَبَۃَ

فَکُّ:  freeing

رَقَبَۃٍ: a neck

اَوۡ:   or

فَکُّ

یَّتِیۡمًا:  an orphan

ذَا مَقۡرَبَۃٍ: near of kin

اَوۡ:  or

مِسۡکِیۡنًا:  a needy

ذَا مَتۡرَبَۃٍ: in misery

 

یَّتِیۡمًا

ذَا مَقۡرَبَۃٍ

اَوۡ

مِسۡکِیۡنًا

ثُمَّ:  then

کَانَ:  he be

مِنَ:  of

الَّذِیۡنَ:   those who

اٰمَنُوۡا: accepted faith

وَ:  and

تَوَاصَوۡا: who urged one another

الصَّبۡرِ:  perseverance (on it)

وَ:  and

تَوَاصَوۡا: who urged one another

بِ: to

الۡمَرۡحَمَۃِ: sympathy

 

ثُمَّ

کَانَ

مِنَ

الَّذِیۡنَ

اٰمَنُوۡا

وَ

تَوَاصَوۡا

بِ

الصَّبۡرِ 

وَ

تَوَاصَوۡا

بِ

Step III: Compare your Translation with the Following:

 

Have We not given him two eyes and a tongue and two lips and not shown him the two ways? But he did not surmount the steep path. And what have you understood what this steep path is? Freeing of a slave or feeding, in days of famine, of an orphan near of kin or a needy in misery. Then he be of those who accepted faith and who urged one another to patience and who urged one another to sympathy.(90:8-17)

How Sympathetic are you?

 

1. A month after being sacked, a former colleague leaves you a message that she is depressed and wants to meet for lunch. You:

i. don’t want to meet her; so you neglect her call. 

ii. divert her to another friend so that you are not bothered by her.

iii. have lunch and hear her out for more than two hours.

 

2. You notice a co-worker is on the verge of tears but is bravely trying to keep her concentration. You:

i. point out what a good job she is doing.

ii. tell her she looks depressed and find out ways to help her overcome her depression.

iii. act normal around her so that she will not have to talk about her problem.

 

3. A friend has recently moved to Africa to devote her life to helping AIDS victims and the poverty-stricken. You:

i. admire her and support her nonprofit work with a donation to her cause.

ii. think she is crazy for putting herself in danger.

iii. are so pained by her newsletters from the field that you do not even read them.

 

4. Your old aunt is sick and in the hospital.You:

i. often visit her.

ii. seldom go to meet her.

iii. would not even like to be informed about her medical condition.

 

5. Your servant / attendant needs immediate medical attention and it is 2 am in the morning. You:

i. immediately arrange for medical help.

ii. are sleeping when you are told this; you get angry and tell the servant to arrange something himself.

iii. tell your servant to wait for the morning.

 

6. You do not have any food or milk for your pet cat and when you realize this it is late in the night. You:

i. plan to wait for the morning.

ii. immediately hop on your car and fetch food for her.

iii. try to feed her with dog biscuits.

 

7. Your friend abuses others, drinks and has many other bad habits.You:

i. try to reform your friend but after failing to do so break off relations with her.

ii. try to reform your friend but in spite of failing keep on trying.

iii. curse and rebuke your friend every time you meet her and make fun of her bad habits.

 

8. A part of your country is affected badly because of floods.You:

i. try to financially help as much as you are able to.

ii. try yourself and also ask others to contribute.

iii. are not bothered much and think that helping these areas is the responsibility of the government.

 

9. You are throwing a big party for your son’s marriage in which you have planned a musical evening. A neighbour complains that he has a sick mother who cannot sleep because of the loud music. You:

i. immediately turn off the music / singing.

ii. turn a deaf ear to his pleading.

iii. scold your neighbour by saying that this is once in a lifetime and you have to continue with it.

 

10. Your poor relative’s son got admitted to a big university of your city, but an influential person managed to get his own son admitted in his place. You have enough influence to set right this malpractice.You:

i. do nothing and let this malpractice go unchecked.

ii. take immediate action and have the ruling of merit restored.

iii. not only do nothing but also congratulate the influential person for his son’s admission.

III. Improve yourself through Self-Evaluation

Write a “Sympathy” diary for two weeks. Each day write down any acts of sympathy you did. At the end of two weeks, share this with your closest friend or with your instructor or just destroy it.

Make a commitment to yourself that in future you will be more sympathetic than before.

 

IV Reconsider the Quiz
