وَ لَا تُصَعِّرۡ خَدَّکَ لِلنَّاسِ وَ لَا تَمۡشِ فِی الۡاَرۡضِ مَرَحًا اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یُحِبُّ کُلَّ مُخۡتَالٍ فَخُوۡرٍ وَ اقۡصِدۡ فِیۡ مَشۡیِکَ وَ اغۡضُضۡ مِنۡ صَوۡتِکَ اِنَّ اَنۡکَرَ الۡاَصۡوَاتِ لَصَوۡتُ الۡحَمِیۡرِ. (31: 18-19)

And do not arrogantly turn away from people nor walk proudly in the land: God does not like the arrogant and the conceited. And be modest in your gait and lower your voice; indeed, the worst of voices is the braying of donkeys. (31:18-19)

How Proud are you?
1. Around your home are photographs:
i. mostly of your family and friend.
ii. mostly of places you have been.
iii. mostly of yourself.
2. When you realize that you have been very rude to someone, you:
i. apologize after sometime after realizing your mistake.
ii. apologize personally as soon as you realize it.
iii. never say anything.
3. When you meet your servant:
i. you wait for the servant to say salam.
ii. you take the initiative in saying salam.
iii. you do not even reply to your servant who says salam to you.
4. You are the captain of the team that won a big national sports tournament. In your speech you say:
i. I have won the cup for my team.

iii. Our team has performed very well to win this tournament.
5. You keep optional fasts every month. You:
i. try to conceal this as much as you can.
ii. want to communicate your piety without sounding boastful.
iii. often mention this before whoever you come into contact with.
6. You show up in a gathering and everyone begins to compliment your clothes or style. You:
i. turn your nose up and feel conceited.
ii. start explaining where you got your expensive clothes from.
iii. just say “thankyou.”
7. You just returned to your parents home after four years away getting your college degree, and your parents begin to lecture you about responsibility after seeing your choice of clothing, hairstyle, manner of talking etc. How do you respond?
i. Instantly show your annoyance.
ii. Begin a heated discussion about your opinion on the subject.
iii. Harshly scold your parents and angrily leave for a friend’s house.
iv. Patiently listen to your parents’ point of view and politely reply.
8. When you find a person has done something very noble, you:

ii. feel miserable because you could not do it but you stay quiet.

Write a “Pride and Vanity” diary for two weeks. Each day write down any acts in which you showed pride and vanity. At the end of two weeks, share this with your closest friend or with your instructor or just destroy it.
Make a commitment to yourself that in future you will be more careful in showing pride and vanity in future.
IV Reconsider the Quiz
Go back and study the quiz you have attempted. In particular, study the answers in which you have scored less. Re-evaluateyour choices and make a commitment to improve in this area.
