In many Muslims countries, Muslim women change their names by adding the names of their husbands to their maiden names in place of their father’s name.

It needs to be clarified here that this is not a requirement of the sharī‘ah. It has more to do with culture and traditions of a society. Thus none of the wives of the Prophet (sws) changed their names when they married the Prophet (sws). ‘Ā’ishah (rta) or Hafsah (rta), for example, never became ‘Ā’ishah Muhammad (rta) or Hafsah Muhammad (rta) respectively.
