The Person of God

He is God, besides whom there is no other deity. He knows the unseen and the manifest. He is the Most Gracious, the Ever Merciful. He is God, besides whom there is no other deity. He is the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One, Peace in entirety, the Giver of Peace, the Guardian, the Mighty One, the All-Powerful, the Most High. Exalted is God above whom they associate with Him! He is God, the Architect, the Originator, the Modeller. All good names are His. All that is in the heavens and the earth gives glory to Him. And He is the Mighty, the Wise. (59:22-24)

God, there is no other deity but He, the Living, the Sustainer. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. All that is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. Who can intercede with Him for someone except by His permission? He knows what lies before them and what is after them and without His will they cannot grasp any part of His knowledge. His dominion prevails in the heavens and the earth, and their protection does not fatigue Him and He is the Exalted, the Great One. (2:255)

All that is in the heavens and the earth gives glory to God. He is the Mighty, the Wise. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Only He gives life and only He gives death, and He has power over all things. He is the First and the Last, the Apparent and the Hidden and has knowledge of all things. It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and then sat on the throne. He knows all that goes into the earth and all that emerges from it and all that descends from the heavens and all that ascends into them. He is with you wherever you are and has knowledge of what you do. He has sovereignty over the heavens and the earth and to Him return all affairs. He makes the night pass into the day and the day pass into the night and He has knowledge of what is concealed in the hearts. (57:1-6)

God’s Mercy

If you refrain from the major sins of what is being prohibited to you, We shall forgive your minor sins and shall make you enter a place of honour. (4:31)

A Parable of Faith in God

God is the light of the heavens and the earth. [In a person’s heart] His light may be compared to a niche that has a lamp. The lamp is in a crystal and the crystal is like a brilliant star. It is lit from a blessed olive tree that is neither eastern nor western. Its very oil would almost light up even though no fire touched it. Light upon light; God guides to this light whomsoever He desires. God mentions these parables to guide people. And God has knowledge of all things. This [niche] is found in houses which God has directed to be built for the remembrance of His name. In them, morning and evening, He is glorified by people whom neither trade nor sale and purchase can divert from remembering God, from diligently offering the prayer and from giving zakah; who dread the day when hearts and eyes shall writhe with anguish so that God may fully recompense their deeds and bless them with more grace. God will give without measure to whomsoever He desires. (24:35-38)

God’s Power and Providence

Say: “Lord, the Master of sovereignty. You grant sovereignty to whom You please and take it away from whom You please; You grant honour to whom You please and humiliate whom You please. All good lies in Your authority. Indeed, You have power over all things. You make the night to pass into the day, and the day to pass into the night and You bring forth the living from the dead and bring forth the dead from the living. And You give unlimited sustenance to whom You please.” (3:26-27)

This is Surah Alif Lam Mim Ra. These are the verses of this Book. And what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, yet most people do not believe. It is God Who raised the heavens without visible pillars. He then ascended the throne and made the sun and the moon subservient [to Him], each pursuing a path till an appointed time. He governs the Universe and makes plain His signs so that you may have conviction in meeting your Lord. It is He who spread out the earth and placed upon it mountains and rivers and for all types of fruit created two types. He covers the night over the day. Indeed, there are signs in this for those who deliberate. And in the land there are adjacent plots: vineyards, cultivated land and palm-trees [with] single [stems] as well as with twin ones. All are nourished by the same water: yet some are more productive than the others. Indeed, there are signs in this for people who use their intellect. (13:1-4)

It is He who sent down water from the heavens from which you drink and from which spring forth the pasturage on which your cattle feed. And from it, He brings forth corn, olives, dates, grapes and fruits of all kind. Indeed, there is a great sign in this for those who reflect. And He put the night and the day, and the sun and the moon into your service, and the stars too are of service at His behest. Indeed, there are signs in this for those who deliberate. And, in the earth, in which He has spread for you various things. Indeed, there is a great sign in this for those who pay heed. It is He who put the sea to your service so that you may eat fresh meat from it and take out from it ornaments to wear. And observe the ships cutting across their course through it [so that you can travel by it] and seek His bounty and so that you may become grateful. And He set the mountains upon the earth lest it should move away with you; and rivers and roads so that you can find your way and also other landmarks. And by the stars too are they guided. Is He, then, Who has created, like him who cannot create? Do you not think? If you count God’s blessings, you will not be able to enlist all of them. God indeed is Forgiving and Merciful. (16:10-18)

And it is God Who sent down water from the heavens; thus He enlivened the earth from it after its death. Indeed, there is a great sign in this for those who hear. And in your cattle too there is a great lesson. We provide you with pure milk from between the bowels and blood in their bellies, very pleasant for those who drink it. And [provide you nutrition] from the fruits of the palm and the vine; you make intoxicants from them and wholesome food as well. Indeed, there is a great sign in this for those who use their intellect. And your Lord inspired the honey-bee, saying: “Make your hives in the mountains, trees, and roofs built by people. Then feed on every kind of fruit, and follow the trodden paths of your Lord.” From its belly comes forth a fluid of different colours; it carries cure for people. Indeed, there is a great sign in this for those who reflect. It is God Who created you, and then it is only He Who makes you die; some He returns to abject old age, when they no longer know all that they once knew. God indeed is Knowledgeable and Powerful. (16:65-70)

And among His [–God’s–] signs are that He has created spouses for you from your own species so that you may receive comfort from them and [for this] He has engendered love and sympathy among you. Indeed, there many signs in this for those who reflect. And among His signs are the creation of the heavens and the earth and the variety of your languages and colours. Indeed, there are signs in this for people of knowledge. And among His signs is your sleeping by night seeking His bounty by day. Indeed, there are signs in this for those who lend ears. And among His signs are that He shows you lightning which creates both fear and hope, and He sends down water from the sky and through it enlivens the land after its death. Indeed there are signs in this for those who use their intellect. And among His signs are that the heavens and the earth stand firm at His bidding. And when He calls you just once to come out of the earth, you shall spontaneously come out. (30:21-25)

God’s Call

And God invites you to [Paradise,] the abode of peace. He guides [according to His law] whomever He wills to a straight path. Those who did good deeds shall have a good reward, and more besides. Neither blackness nor humiliation shall overcast their faces. These are the dwellers of Paradise, wherein they shall abide forever. As for those that have earned evil, then the reward of evil is evil. And humiliation will cover them. No one will be able to save them from God. It will be as though patches of the dark night have veiled their faces. They are the dwellers of the Fire, wherein they shall abide forever. (10:25-27)

Procuring God’s Nearness

Believers! Fear God and seek His nearness and [for this] strive for His cause so that you may prosper. (5: 35)

Seeking Refuge with God

Pray: “I seek refuge with the Lord who breaks apart and brings forth everything; from the evil of all that He has created and from the evil of darkness when it overspreads, and from the evil of those who blow on knots and from the evil of every envious person when he envies.” (113:1-5)

Pray: “I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind, the God of mankind from the evil of the prompter [of vice] who withdraws [after his prompting], who prompts evil suggestions in the hearts of people, [and is] from among the jinn and mankind.” (114:1-6)

Remembering God

Surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and in the alternation of night and day, there are signs for men of insight; those who keep God in remembrance while standing, sitting, and lying down, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth. [They pray:] “Lord! You have not created this [world] without a purpose. Glory be to You! So, protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (3:190-191)

Polytheism is Unforgivable

God will not forgive those who [intentionally] ascribe partners to Him; but lesser than this [sin] He can forgive any sin for anyone He intends [according to His law]. And, [in fact], he who ascribed partners to God is guilty of a dreadful sin. (4:48)
